Unit Four of the MET Museum Art of the Islamic World examines science and the art of the Islamic world. The goal of the unit is to showcase the different innovations produced in the Islamic world and the preservation of knowledge. This unit features scientific topics relating to the Islamic world such as astronomy and astrology, observatories, and medicine. Examples of featured art presented in this guide are planispheric astrolabe and preparing medicine from honey. Each featured artwork includes a brief description, the link to the overall theme, the function, and context of the art piece. Lesson plans are provided that help structure science classes by incorporating Islamic art when discussing topics relating to art and environment. Suggested readings and resources are also included. Grade level: middle school and high school.
