Section 2(a) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom addresses “Freedom of Religion”. This section highlights the provision of freedom of conscience and religion guaranteed in the Charter as well as similar provisions in other Canadian laws. The purpose, an in-depth analysis, and analytical framework of freedom of religion are outlined. Selected issues in respect of freedom of religion are included, such as: freedom from conformity to religious dogma; secularism and state neutrality; religious communications; best interests of the child; and income taxes. Lastly, the freedom of conscience and Section 93 denominational school rights and privileges are discussed.
