This article highlights how issues of gender and sexuality in the Middle East are discussed in the context of the ongoing uprisings. Maya Mikdashi outlines three themes that are used to frame, gender, and politicize the Arab uprisings. The first theme is the equation of gender with women and/or sexual and gender minorities. That is, heteronormative men are often excluded in the gendered analysis of the uprisings. The second theme employed in the discourse related to the uprisings is the fear of Islamists. This theme notes how Islamists are depicted as scary and dangerous to women. Moreover, the fear of Islamists is linked to Islamophobia rather than gender justice. The last theme is the use of gendered and sexed violence to discourage or discredit protests and revolutionaries. This theme analyzes how revolutions are gauged by how it treats women and how non-Arab regimes also use this frame to discredit Arab protests.
