The article provides an introduction to the meaning of jihad, both in the early Islamic tradition and in a contemporary context. Jihad, an Arabic term, means to “make an effort” or “to strive towards a goal”, “to exert oneself”, “to struggle”, and by no means does it mean to incite hate, violence and bloodshed. Forms of improvement, spirituality, education, and hard work to improve financial situations are primary examples of jihad.
