Applications Open: Education Youth Leadership Award for Nisg̱a'a Citizens

Furthering Justice through Education Youth Leadership Award In Honour of 2023 Wilps Ni’isjoohl Memorial Totem Pole Rematriation

This award is in honour of the rematriation of the Ni’isioohl memorial totem pole. The award is intended to support a secondary school student in the Nisga’a school district (SD92) who has demonstrated justice-oriented efforts and or interests in activism and education related to decolonization, Indigenous self-determination and self-governance, and inclusive and collaborative citizenship and/or matriarchal leadership. The $1000.00 award is intended to support the student in ongoing education (through post-secondary schooling, or community-based and guided education) that is in line with the values and activism of the Ni’isjoohl Memorial Totem Pole Rematriation delegation’s work.

Application to consist of:

  • a 250 single-page, double-spaced essay or a 3 to 5 minute video presentation which outlines the importance of the Ni’isjoohl memorial pole rematriation.
  • Statements illustrating the applicant’s involvement in “justice-oriented efforts and/or interests in activism and education related to decolonization, Indigenous self-determination and self-governance, and inclusive and collaborative citizenship and/or matriarchal leadership”

 

Eligibility: Any Nisga’a citizen in K-12 who currently attends school in District 92, and all of our Nisga’a Urban Locals (Gitladax Nisga’a Terrace Society, Gitmaxmak’ay Nisga’a Society Prince Rupert and Nisga’a Ts’amiks Vancouver Society) are eligible to apply. The award will be adjudicated by the school district (SD92) along with a representative of NLG.

For any award recipient who decides to attend undergraduate studies at SFU, the CCEJ also offers a part time and renewable Research Assistantship with the Centre.
