The ban against the niqab by the Harper government resembles previous imperialist and colonialist bans. Colonialism and militarization were justified and maintained by perpetuating the narrative of saving brown women from brown men. These narratives are fueled by stereotypes that Muslim men are violent and Muslim women are oppressed by Muslim men. The anti-Muslim laws proposed by the Canadian government reinforce these harmful narratives. These laws posed by the Canadian government in order to protect Muslim women have serious ramifications.
