On June 5th 2021,  4 members of a Muslim family, the Afzaal’s, were killed in London, Ontario. The attack has revived the discussion of Islamophobia and hate crimes in Canada. As a result, individuals have called upon federal action against Quebec’s Bill 21, a Bill which prevents public employees from wearing religious symbols such as hijabs. Although there is no direct link between Bill 21 and the attack in London, however, critics claim that hate-based policies such as Bill 21 contribute to Islamophobia and violence against Muslims. Therefore, Canada needs to take action against anti-Muslim sentiments and address policies such as Bill 21 that reinforce Islamophobic narratives.

The Teaching Against Islamophobia resources were developed with funding support from the Law Foundation of BC, and the Centre for Comparative Muslim Studies at SFU.
