In 2014, buses in San Francisco displayed an ad part of an anti-Islam campaign, the American Freedom Defence Initiative. Although the ads were critiqued by organizations, they continued to run because ad space on buses are private owned spaces. In addition, the ads did not directly violate SFMTA ad policy. Suggestions have been made such as proposing a ban on viewpoint ads in order to keep prejudicial ads off buses.
