The Yellowhead Treaty Map https://treatymap.yellowheadinstitute.org/ is an interactive teaching and learning resource that centres Indigenous perspectives on treaties in Canada. It provides accessible descriptions of all treaties signed since 1763, organized across three historical eras—Pre-Confederation, Confederation-era, and Modern treaties—along with insights into Indigenous diplomacy and non-treaty lands. The Map highlights the complexity, contestation, and ongoing nature of treaties, including disputes, reinterpretations, and legal challenges.
To support meaningful engagement with this material, the accompanying Education Guide offers nine adaptable learning exercises designed for Grade 8 to post-secondary learners. Each activity includes learning objectives, preparation steps, and assignment options, encouraging critical, creative, and reflective approaches to treaty history and contemporary Indigenous–state relations. The Guide can be easily adapted by educators to suit different classroom contexts and learning needs.
Together, the Treaty Map and Education Guide provide a starting point for understanding treaties as living agreements, while foregrounding Indigenous knowledge systems and the continued significance of treaty relationships in Canada. These resources also help to situate current debates around British Columbia’s Declaration on Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA) within the longer history of treaty relationships, Indigenous sovereignty, and Indigenous self-determination.
